Offense, very
simply, is scoring runs. Offense is taking advantage of all
situations that arise in a particular game that can result
in scoring runs. Offense is hitters knowing their roles and
consistently performing those tasks or roles.
Hitting is a major aspect of offense; it requires
aggressive, confident, reactive and smart behavior. It is
not a sometime thing; it requires work, adaptation and
adjustment. It is a skill that you never stop learning if
you want continued success.
The other aspects of offense are: Situational hitting, two
strike approach, pre-game practice, pre-game mental
preparation, bunting (sacrifice and base hit), and base
running (reading, stealing and sliding). The mental approach
to hitting is also a very important aspect of offense. It is
a very important part of the maturing process of a hitter
and it can change as the player moves up through the levels
of baseball.
Offense is a team concept, whereas hitting is an individual
skill. Put the two together and the team and player improve.
